Nails have evolved to protect the sensitive nerve-filled touch pads on the bottoms of our fingers and toes to allow us to handle things with greater dexterity.
Why do people have finger/toe nails?
Evolutionary artifact. They used to be claws in our predecessors - tools and weapons.
To protect the skin cuz it would be weird if we didn't have them; it's just something we should have. And to paint them! Lol
Because it would look weird if we didnt.
